DeForest Kelley departed for the Undiscovered Country on June 11, 1999 after a prolonged illness with stomach cancer. His ashes were scattered at sea according to his wishes. He is survived by his wife Carolyn and thousands of fans worldwide whose lives he touched both as his charming self and as the curmudgeonly and compassionate physician who became his most famous alter ego.

Kelley's Hollywood Walk of Fame star is at 7021 Hollywood Boulevard; he chose the film logo rather than the television one. For years, his star was kept bright and shining by his official star-polisher, Kristine Smith.
Kris has written up her personal memoirs of her friendship and fanship in DeForest Kelley: a Harvest of Memories, My Life and Times with a Remarkable Gentleman Actor (available from www.1stbooks.com).

Star Trek cast signatures and handprints -- De's elegant signature takes up the largest square -- are in front of Graumann's Chinese Theater, at 6925 Hollywood Boulevard.
